The NCAA sets a hard cap on athletic scholarships per program. For tennis in 2025–26:

• Men's tennis — 4.5 scholarships per program.
• Women's tennis — 8 scholarships per program.
• Roster size — typically 8–12 players per team.

Why 'equivalency' changes everything

Tennis is not a headcount sport (like football or women's basketball). Coaches divide the scholarship pool into fractions. A men's program with 4.5 scholarships and 10 players might give a UTR 13 recruit 90%, a UTR 12 recruit 60%, and a UTR 10.5 recruit 20% — all on the same roster.

This is why 'how many D1 tennis scholarships are there?' is the wrong question. The right question is 'what percentage will THIS program offer ME?'

Typical scholarship packages by roster position

• Top-3 singles player — 75–100% at most D1 programs.
• 4–6 singles — 40–70%.
• 7–8 singles / doubles specialist — 10–30%.
• Walk-on with academic aid — 0% athletic + 30–80% academic at strong-academic D1s (Ivy League, Stanford, Duke).

International recruits and the scholarship pool

Around 60% of D1 men's tennis and 55% of D1 women's tennis rosters are international. Coaches actively use scholarship money on international recruits because the depth of talent (top-500 ITF juniors, UTR 12+) far exceeds what's available domestically at that level.

How Ivy League and Division III change the math

Ivy League D1 programs do not offer athletic scholarships — but they offer need-based aid that regularly covers 80–100% for international families under a certain income threshold. Division III offers no athletic scholarships, but combined academic + need-based aid at strong D3 programs (Emory, NYU, Chicago) can match a mid-D1 athletic package.
