International Athlete Scholarships in the USA

Athletic scholarships are one of the main reasons international athletes pursue US college sports. But the system is more nuanced than a simple 'full ride'. This guide explains exactly how athletic scholarships work — and how international student-athletes secure them.

The three main scholarship-awarding associations

  • NCAA Division I & II: the most competitive and best funded. Only DI and DII offer athletic scholarships (DIII does not).
  • NAIA: smaller schools, often with strong athletic programs and generous scholarship budgets.
  • NJCAA: two-year junior colleges, often used as a springboard to a four-year NCAA school.

Headcount vs equivalency sports

In headcount sports (NCAA DI football, men's and women's basketball, women's tennis, women's gymnastics, and women's volleyball) each scholarship is either a full or nothing.

In equivalency sports (everything else — soccer, track, swimming, baseball, etc.) coaches divide a fixed scholarship budget across their roster. Most international athletes in equivalency sports receive a partial athletic scholarship combined with academic aid.

Combining athletic and academic aid

Strong academics massively increase your total funding. Many international athletes receive 40–60% athletic scholarships combined with 20–40% academic scholarships, resulting in near-full financial packages.

This is why maintaining a strong GPA and strong English test scores matters as much as your athletic profile.

What a scholarship actually covers

  • Tuition and fees
  • Room and board (housing and meal plan)
  • Required course books
  • In some cases, a stipend for cost-of-attendance expenses

How international athletes realistically earn scholarships

  • Compete at a level coaches can verify — national teams, top domestic leagues, ranked tournaments.
  • Produce a professional highlight video and keep updated stats and results.
  • Register for NCAA/NAIA eligibility on time.
  • Contact coaches consistently and professionally, with personalised messages.
  • Work with an advisor who knows individual programs, coach preferences and current roster needs.

Typical scholarship packages we see

Every year we place international athletes with scholarship packages ranging from partial (roughly 30% of total cost) up to full scholarships worth $60,000–$85,000 per year. The exact figure depends on sport, division, academic profile and program need.

Frequently asked questions

Can international students get full athletic scholarships?

Yes, especially in NCAA Division I headcount sports and top NAIA programs. In equivalency sports, most packages are partial athletic combined with academic aid.

Do NCAA Division III schools give athletic scholarships?

No. DIII does not offer athletic scholarships, but many DIII schools offer significant academic and need-based aid to international students.

Are scholarships guaranteed for four years?

They are typically issued as one-year agreements that are renewed annually, provided the student-athlete meets academic, athletic and conduct standards.
