NCAA Swimming Recruiting Times 2026

Every US college swim coach uses recruiting time bands to decide who to reply to. This guide breaks down the actual times international swimmers need across freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and IM — for NCAA Division I, II and NAIA — plus how coaches convert your long-course meter PBs.

How to read this guide

US coaches recruit off short-course yards (SCY). Every time below is SCY unless marked LCM. For LCM PBs, multiply your 50 free time by roughly 1.11 to estimate SCY, or use the SwimSwam / USA Swimming conversion tables for precision.

Times below are approximate recruiting bands for 2026 — every program is different, and academic strength can push a coach to recruit slower times.

NCAA Division I men — recruiting times (SCY)

  • 50 free — Top-10: 19.5 / Mid-D1: 20.5–21.0 / Low-D1: 21.5.

LCM to SCY conversion — quick reference

International swimmers usually train and race in LCM. Approximate conversions:

  • 50 free LCM 22.5 ≈ 20.3 SCY.
  • 100 free LCM 50.0 ≈ 44.0 SCY.
  • 100 back LCM 56.0 ≈ 49.0 SCY.
  • 100 breast LCM 1:03 ≈ 55.0 SCY.
  • 200 IM LCM 2:05 ≈ 1:50 SCY.

How to use these times when emailing coaches

Only email coaches whose team's current 6th-fastest swimmer is within 1.5% of your time — that is the practical recruiting window. Sending times far off band wastes both your time and the coach's, and reduces reply rates on the programs where you are actually competitive.

Frequently asked questions

What times do you need to swim in NCAA Division I?

Rough D1 recruiting entry is 21.5 SCY (men) and 24.0 SCY (women) in the 50 free. Top-10 programs recruit closer to 19.5 (men) and 22.0 (women).

How do NCAA coaches evaluate LCM times?

They convert LCM to SCY using standard conversion tables and weight the meet quality — FINA-recognised national championships carry far more weight than local unranked meets.

Are recruiting times the same at every D1 program?

No. Top-10 programs recruit ~1.5 seconds faster in the 50 free than low-D1 programs. Use each team's current roster times as your real benchmark.
